Hurdlr: Creating the Invoicing Feature

Since Hurdlr is a product aimed at self-employed individuals in managing their finances all in one place, the next natural feature for us to build was Invoicing.

As with designing other Hurdlr features, I worked closely with Hurdlr's CTO, Anu, and a few full stack devs to help build this feature out. Hurdlr Invoicing is a Hurdlr PRO feature.

Role & Impact

CEO: Subject matter expert
CTO:
Subject matter expert and tech lead
Myself: UX Designer (competitive research & wireframes), UI Designer (high-fidelity mockups & prototype)

Impact: This became a primary Value Proposition to entice users to become Hurdlr PRO users. PRO subscriptions increased by 23%, and B2B deals increased by 14% over the course of 12 months after release to production.

The Problem

Hurdlr users have to rely on other software in order to create and send invoices to clients. A high-level goal of Hurdlr's is to be a one-stop product for all business needs. Naturally, to solve for this, we had to begin thinking of creating an Invoicing feature for Hurdlr. This would be a PRO feature.

Competitive analysis

To get an understanding of the types of data points would be required, I reviewed some invoicing features from a few of our competitors.

Information architecture

After getting a better understanding of what our competitors do when creating an invoice, I created an Invoicing Spec doc. The doc outlined the functionality this feature would have, along with its respective data points.

Anu and I went back and forth refining this doc to make sure every functionality we wanted to build added enough value to our users. There were some extraneous features, like duplicating invoices, that we de-prioritized in order to get the work out the door sooner.

High Fidelity UI & Data Points

After we had a good understanding of the data necessary, I went ahead with wire-framing my initial designs which quickly turned into creating the polished UI. Below are what the InvoiceDash screen looks like, and the first screen of the New Invoice flow.

Outcome

We began testing this feature in our Hurdlr PRO Beta tester group. These folks received these new features for free in return for their detailed feedback and sentiments on the work. Results were immensely positive, with some feedback that addressed more of the minor parts of invoice creation, such as making sure users had the availability to specify the exact hex color they would like to use for their invoice.
